Visionary creative and archivist NIGO joins adidas for the adidas by Human Made collection. NIGO’s eye for heritage apparel is channeled through Human Made’s designs for adidas, which include references to NIGO’s personal collection, and nods to vintage sporting silhouettes.
A special graphic logo can be found throughout, created by the Human Made team exclusively for the adidas by Human Made collection. The partnership aims to look towards the future of creation under the message “Future is in the past.”
The first delivery includes two footwear silhouettes, arriving in the form of a running silhouette, the Tokio Solar HM, and a court sneaker, the UNOFCL HM, while running-inspired apparel and graphic T-shirts round out the capsule.
The footwear highlight is the Tokio Solar HM, which takes inspirational cues from the adidas archive at the brand’s global headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and more specifically the “TOKIO” trainer. The “TOKIO” trainer was released in 1962 for the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics. The model returns for 2020, equipped with a cushioned Boost sole. The modern Primeknit upper contrasts with the heritage-inspired suede T-toe and mudguard details, as well as the X heel reinforcement. The iconic Human Made heart logo appears as an embossed heel patch on both shoes.
With the Tokio Solar HM being the hero shoe, Nigo’s art direction for the accompanying campaign takes inspiration from the Japanese art form of Kabuki and features Kabuki actor Toranosuke Nakamura.
The Tokio Solar HM is accompanied by the UNOFCL HM, an archive court sneaker redesigned by Human Made. A velcro closure is comprised of three straps, with typography on each strap forming the slogan, “GEARS FOR FUTURUSTIC TEENAGERS.” Heart shaped perforations form three stripes on the full-grain leather upper, while additional text can be found on each heel, reading “HUMAN MADE” and “DRY ALLS” on the right and left heels respectively. Lastly, Human Made’s specially designed heart logo is printed on the tongue.
A pack of white T-shirts once again features Human Made’s exclusive logo on the chest, appearing in three color variations of navy, red and yellow. A matching trefoil logo is printed on the rear neck.
An additional white T-shirt features Katakana text translating to “adidas by NIGO.” A striped long-sleeve features a simple chest logo, with a serrated edge border that nods toward the adidas three-stripes applied to sneakers like the Campus.
Further apparel is included in the form of a French terry cotton sweatshirt with three striped adorning the left arm, and embroidered heart logo on the chest.
Lastly, a mesh crop-top features a classic adidas trefoil logo on the chest, with the exclusive Human Made logo on the back.
NIGO is not only a visionary creative but also a multifaceted force whose talents include design, photography, curation and music production.
