Ugly but Cool: the Ugg Boots.

From the furry slippers launched by Gucci to the Crocs by Balenciaga, the trend of ugly but comfortable – and, we add, cool – boots is raging every season.

Since fashion and trends have also turned to comfort, we have all breathed a sigh of relief. Last season, we saw chunky sandals with bulky soles, comfortable clogs that also served as a fashion statement. Winter has its reference boots: the UGGs.

The cult boots of the 2000s are the nostalgic revival that nods to Y2K fashion, which has made rather clunky but comfortable and warm shoes provincial. Like all bold trends, they gather around themselves an audience that loves them and, on the other hand, those who would never wear them due to their unrefined and elegant aesthetics.

We have also witnessed a change in narrative from “Ugly Shoes” to “Ugly Chic” when the concept was definitively made provincial by Alessandro Michele, who, under Gucci‘s artistic direction, launched furry slippers in 2018, and subsequently by Balenciaga with Crocs boots in 2022.

Yet, it’s not the creations that define the ugly style, but rather a specific lifestyle: relaxed, improvised but still fashionable. We think of the ugly when observing candid photos of actors and celebrities in showbiz who easily put on the most comfortable thing in their wardrobe without ever looking out-of-brand. One such example is Kate Moss, who has always appeared absolutely cool even with skinny jeans tucked into sheepskin UGGs, leather biker jackets, and a pair of black sunglasses.

The aesthetics of fashion has realized that it can no longer base its core business on harmony and beauty, on what is merely attractive: trends and style have opened up to comfort and what is universally not defined or perceived as “beautiful,” fortunately.

New UGG Models for Autumn/Winter 2023

The new designs, presented in a compact and seemingly lighter form, are capturing the hearts of young generations. Earlier this year, we were able to admire mini UGG boots worn stylishly by Kaia Gerber, consistently paired with form-fitting leggings and small sweaters or hoodies. Irina Shayk also succumbed to the charm of this casual look, while Emily Ratajkowski showcased hers with shorts, a fluorescent sweatshirt, and a black leather jacket.

More recently, UGG cloggs, known as Tasman UGG, have emerged, chosen by Gigi Hadid, who wore them with sweatpants and an eco-friendly shearling jacket, and by Elsa Hosk, who paired them with a masculine blazer and light jeans, evoking Sharon Stone’s iconic style in 2010. In both cases, pants were not tucked into UGGs to avoid unpleasant creases, a common mistake in the early 2000s.

Gigi Hadid has shown a particular love for mini UGGs with platforms, becoming an essential element for facing the first cold days of autumn. We wonder if these boots will even replace the iconic Birkenstocks, ensuring maximum comfort. Her autumnal and cozy look was completed with a comfortable tracksuit, ready for the weekend.

UGG at the London Fashion Week SS24

The latest model that is capturing attention is the UGG Classic Dipper, characterized by a platform and a soft upper, but with a neoprene shaft that adheres better to the leg. The interior is lined with UGGplush™, a regenerated wool that offers the classic comfort of UGG®, and the sole is made of SugarSole™, a renewable sugar cane cultivated with rainwater instead of petroleum-based EVA.

In contrast to modern minimalism, UGGs emerge as a series of special collections, not occasional but true co-branded capsule collections. These were presented during the recent fashion weeks, becoming one of the most influential trends for spring/summer 2024.

The five runways featured a variety of models, from classic sheepskin-lined boots to lesser-known ballet flats. Ashley Williams added prints to classic UGG boots, while Chopova Lowena decorated them with gift bows, and Shuting Qiu created a two-tone version with furry details.

Finally, the latest online release is dedicated to the collaboration between Ugg and Telfar, the famous brand known for its tote bags, often called the “Bushwick Birkin.” This denim model features a maxi logo on the side that resembles wings. Additionally, the side hole makes them easier to put on.
